snappy is just dictionary coding with no entropy. The code is formed by literals and backreferences. pretty simple design. It's design for reasonable level of compression, with very fast codec. So you use it for comms between programs, where you want messages to move around quickly with fewer bytes than raw. Wouldn't use it for saving tons of data on disk for a long time.
