When I was in 7th grade in 1959 our punishment for misbehaviour was having to return to school on a Saturday afternoon and write out Kipling's "If" two or three hundred times in longhand.


Perhaps the number of repetitions has grown over time in your embellished memory. Even at 5 minutes per writing and 200 times, that's 16+ hours.


Or perhaps litoE was frequently punished, accumulating hundreds of copies....
